Downtown Grove Hosts June “Second Saturdays” Festivities

While Mother Nature attempted to have an impact on last month’s Second Saturday festivities, the third installment of this popular summer event in Grove promises to be smooth sailing on Grand Lake!
A spring shower and a beautiful flower lead into entertainment each hour for the June 14th downtown affair as The Playmakers will be hosting a comedic presentation and live music will be heard throughout the evening at various locations. Coming off a comprehensive revitalization that was completed last year, downtown Grove is the ideal setting for a seasonal celebration of this magnitude.
It should come as no surprise that the girls at Magnolias will be up to their silly shenanigans while also hosting singer and songwriter John Randolph. His wealth of musical talents will be on display at the shop on Third Street, providing expressions of sheer harmonic diversity.
The crowned King of Karaoke Kingdom, Dink West, will be encouraging folks to read his lips and put theirs vocal chords into action while a few blocks away Java Dave’s will be offering delicious beverages and sandwiches to go with their relaxed tunes.
Of course the foundation of the Second Saturday events is always the fantastic art as Grove offers a goldmine of shops and galleries that consistently presents pleasant surprises to newcomers visiting the area. Look for the awesome photography of Bob Livesay at Brown Design or the ever-changing and always-growing studio of Donna Jackson. Spectacular photography will also be on display just around the corner at The Brush & Palette Club with work by Jacob Schwartz. Blazon Studio, one of the hottest stops on the artistic expedition, assures creative conversation that will complement all of the creativity that surrounds you. As always, Larry Cole and Joan Ramsey will be your hosts for the evening.
Present your face like a blank canvas to Vicki McCaul and she will create a masterpiece, painting a blushed cheek or maybe even an arm or leg. Wait patiently amongst the cluster of children that usually hover in her presence like hummingbirds dancing in the wind. Magic will be in the air at Fishers of Men as an illusionist will put on amazing feats and look for the crews from the YMCA and Core Fitness to exercise their right to have a Grand time. Expect for the Sports Center, along with block-neighbor Gourmet’s, to cast a ray of sunshine into the mix as well.
Besides the delicate delights provided by Daylight Donuts and Tiramisu, there will also be other vendors on hand throughout the downtown area. “Living the Grand Life” is an expression of taste and June’s Second Saturday event will offer an array good taste in food, art and music. The celebration begins this Saturday at 6:00 pm with The Playmakers hitting the stage at 7:00 pm with a presentation of “The Public Eye.” Don’t miss it!

Salty Humor in Grand Lake

GROVE – Art demonstrations, street performers, musicians, face painting and other festivities will line the sidewalks of historical downtown Grove, Oklahoma as the community celebrates its monthly Second Saturdays festival.

Grove Second Saturdays offers music, art, food and fun for the whole family, beginning at 6 p.m.

The festival’s trademark, the large “2” sitting in front of Blazon Studio is becoming something of a conversation piece as well as announcing the festival.

“The giant sculptural ’2’ has turned out to be an ever changing work of art as people continue to come and put their mark on it,” said Joan Ramsey , Blazon Studio manager and Grove Second Saturdays event coordinator.

Highlighting this month’s festival is Oklahoma’s premiere pirate crew “The Ladies of the Salty Kiss.” Their brand of salty humor is sure to bring a grin and chuckle. The Renaissance Faire actresses and reenactors portray a number of countries from the Renaissance Era and may enlist you in one of their skits.

Shops and art galleries will be open to welcome you as you look for that last minute Mother’s Day gift or share dinner and desserts with friends at Caffé Tiramisu or Java Dave's Coffee House and Cafe.

Daylight Donuts will be serving hot donuts beginning at 6 p.m. and IBC Bank will be giving away root beer floats.

Fishers of Men will host an illusionist and street venders will be selling children’s bows, children’s furniture by Doc's Wood Creations and Grand Lake’s infamous cookbook: "Doin It in the Kitchen."

Grand Lake Sports Center will have professional fishermen in to help you choose the best fishing lures and bait while serving you a beverage with some tall Grand Lake fishing tales.

As you stroll down the sidewalk listening to blues and jazz tunes by the "Alltones" and prairie rock by “A Definite Reflection,” the aroma from B-B-Q sandwiches and fried tators and onions, will surely cause you to stop for a plate.

The Brush and Palette Gallery’s featured exhibit is "Mixed Media Mayhem". Other art exhibits include Brown Design displaying Pat Maher's vibrant paintings, Donna Jackson Fine Art Gallery and Blazon Studio with their contemporary industrial artwork and creative toys.

Grove to continue Second Saturday…

GROVE -- A concept that was created to enhance the Grove downtown revitalization project is in progress as Grove's Second Saturday continues this weekend.

Grove Second Saturday will include artists on the sidewalks, musicians, food, vendors and more.

"Even with construction currently under way regarding Grove's downtown revitalization project, business leaders decided to go ahead and launch this spectacular monthly event," said Larry Cole of ColeCom and Blazon Studio.

"There are three event dates remaining for this season, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Aug. 11, Sept. 8 and Oct. 13," Cole said.

The Ladies of the Salty Kiss, a comedy troupe of legalized pirates, will add to the fun and festivities of the event, Cole said. The all-female comedy troupe is made up of improvisation street performers who specialize in Renaissance Faires.

"The city of Grove was committed enough to alter their ordinances in support of this event," Cole said. The city, the Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Lake Association, have all joined the cause.

"If we can work together, we can accomplish anything. The bottom
line is commerce is good for everybody," Cole said.

Downtown Grove Undergoing Rebirth

May 24, 2007

Chronicle of Grand Lake

The Pulse is BACK thanks to Grove Second Saturdays

The goal is to see downtown Grove become a thriving creative epicenter for both culture and commerce in the Grand Lake area. Thoughts began to erupt after Blazon Studio was opened last year and there was a desire to market the new and improving area at a greater speed and with more enthusiasm. Through the process that followed, one important thing was learned. The right people were present, but they weren’t going to the right places.

“People are buying art, but they’re not buying it here. That’s one thing that needed to change. The community was hosting the Art Gallery Walks but the event appeared to need more appeal, like food, vendors and live music. Second Saturdays is what we came up with, after we familiarized ourselves with events in other communities that have become very successful. This has been a cooperative event. Our gallery just became kind of the hub,” said Larry Cole of ColeCom and Blazon Studio.

Even with construction currently underway regarding the Downtown Revitalization Project, business leaders decided to go ahead and launch this spectacular monthly event. It was believed that there really is no better time than the present. Besides, revitalization goes much deeper than the aesthetic goals that are already in place. The downtown area needs to also be revitalized in spirit and in attitude.

The frame of mind of everyone needs to soar to greater heights, not only reaching outside the box, but dismissing completely the encapsulated virtues that once prevented the birth of true creativity. The historical personality of the town needs to be thrived upon, while entering the next chapter of its storied legacy. There is so much there beneath the surface, only moments away from a promising blossom. Everyone must be onboard to nourish the seeds of change.

“The City of Grove was committed enough to alter their ordinances in support of this event. The city, the chamber of commerce and the Grand Lake Association have all joined the cause. I’ve never seen anything like it. Our momentum is strong and the response from the community has been unbelievably positive. I think Grove is going to have a major breakthrough. If we work together, we can accomplish anything. The bottom line is commerce is good for everybody,” said Cole.

The first of five scheduled events in 2007 takes place June 9th and the activities won’t be limited to just the dowtown area. There will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Visit grovesecondsaturdays.com for more information. Change is upon us. Be a part of the change.
